Sydney has this habit of always starting a conversation with me by saying, "Mom, can I talk to you about something?" or "Mom, can I ask you a question?" Every time she says this my heart skips a little beat preparing me for the inevitable "talk". But usually when she says, "Mom, can I talk to you?" The question is usually something like, When are we going to the fair again? or Can you get me some chocolate milk? or Can we go to Wal-Mart?
Well, tonight I am laying in her bed with her and reading a library book about waterfowl and how they preen their feathers and suddenly Sydney says, "Mom that is cool, but I was wondering when you kiss a boy, how does that kiss tell your insides (as she is rubbing her belly) that you are married and you can have a baby? I was a little off guard, she definitely didn't "prepare" me for the question this time, and I fumbled around with a discussion about her being too young to kiss boys and who the heck knows what I said because it didn't make one bit of sense to me, let alone a 6 year old, and when I finished my "explaining" I said, "do you have any more questions?" and she said, " Yes, can we visit a cemetery someday, and visit our friend Bud, and take him some flowers?
My goodness, didn't take her long to get off subject, but now I have to go to the cemetery.
