Sydney sold a 4-H steer this year and has been raising money all summer so she could buy a heifer at the harvest fair. Well, all of her hard work paid off, in two heifers.
Sydney's only criteria for heifer selection to this point was that they had to have white on them or be a color other than black. Guess you can see by the picture how that strategy worked out for her. (Both are black and no white.) The heifer she originally picked out was a black baldly and it happened to be the first heifer out and possibly the highest selling heifer of the sale. So we ended up going with a "family" strategy, pick a gentle heifer that would work as a future cow prospect and give her some showing experience along the way.
I think we ended up getting everything we, Sydney, wanted and they are both gentle to boot. Only problem is they are the same age so they will show in the same class at the fair and at next years harvest fair. She will probably be picking the easiest one to show.
Pappa and Nam gave Rikki and Alex each a heifer this spring and tagged each heifer with a number 1, Rikki's tag is orange and Alex's is purple and now, Sydney's #1 tag is pink. Sydney is excited about that too!
